Makeup Secrets You Never Knew For Covering Up Yellow and Orange Skin

My efforts to lose some weight this summer ended in orange Oompa Loompa skin and a frightening possibility of jaundice, liver failure, and hypothyroidism.  In this time I learned some neat tricks for covering up this creepy color.  So even if your orange skin is due to spray tan overdose you should keep reading on.

How My Healthy Diet Of Fruits And Veggies Gave Me Orange Skin

It all started this spring when I wanted to prepare for bathing suit season by starting a healthier diet. Some carrot juice for breakfast, spinach salads, fresh fruit and vegetables. Nothing wrong with that right? Well after a month I did indeed drop over 7 pounds however one day while I was out walking with my mom she commented on how yellow my hands and face were. I also got some comments on my “healthy tan” and my “spray tan” and that’s when I decided to find out the cause of my orange skin.

Oh it’s no big deal I thought, it’s probably just all the carrots I was eating. After some more thinking I started to worry, I hadn’t had any carrot juice for over two weeks, could I possibly still be orange from carrots or was there something more serious going on? So of course when one thinks there’s something seriously wrong, one goes on Google to see what anonymous people on the internet have to say! Hours of googlefu later and much time on WebMD I narrowed the problems down to either jaundice, hypothyroidism, or liver failure. I also had a couple of other symptoms that matched up, especially for liver problems. I really started freaking out at this point and ordered some lab tests the very next day.

So $300 worth of lab tests plus pounds of liver healing herbs (milk thistle, nettle, dandelion root) later, it appears that I’m not dying and really did just eat too much healthy food.  Hard to believe but I’ve developed a junk food deficiency!

Causes Of Orange Skin Tone

Apparently it’s not just carrots and orange colored foods that can cause carotenemia which is the official name for yellow/orange skin caused by too much carotenoids in your diet. It’s also caused by dark leafy greens such as spinach and the kale I was eating when I wasn’t eating spinach. Kiwi, cabbage, acorn squash, milk, and mangoes also have high levels of carotenoids and can cause orange skin. So if your skin is yellow, be sure to check out the amount of veggies and fruit you’ve been eating recently.  Also check your supplements as some like Vitamin E, Vitamin A, and Vitamin D capsules contain palm oil which is also high in carotenoids. So maybe some junk food in your diet has a purpose for those of us who easily turn into Oompa Loompas! Here’s a list of all the foods that are high in carotenoids (from Wikipedia):

  • Alfalfa

  • Apples

  • Apricots

  • Asparagus

  • Beans

  • Beet greens

  • Broccoli

How To Get Rid Of Orange Skin

So I reduced the amount of veggies and fruits I was eating and one month later my skin is normal colored again. In the mean time, here are some tricks I learned for covering up the weird yellowish orange shade I had.

Concealer For Yellow And Orange Skin Tone

First, the easiest way to neutralize the yellow in your skin is to use a color correcting concealer.  Take a look at the color wheel and you’ll notice that orange and yellow are directly opposite of blue and purple.

Uses For Blue And Purple Concealer

A blue concealer will cancel out the orange in your skin while purple is better for yellow colors. These concealers mix together with your skin color to neutralize the orange/yellow tones to a light brownish/peach flesh tone.

How To Use Blue Concealer

Yes these concealers look scary, you’ll want to use a very light touch and barely apply it all over the orange/yellow areas of your face.  Blend, blend, and blend some more to make sure you don’t have any bright blue/purple spots sticking out.  After canceling out the orange/yellow your skin can look dull or sallow so you will need to add some color back to your skin with pink concealer or blush.

Where To Buy Purple Concealer?

Since it can be really hard to find blue and purple concealer, you’ll probably have to buy it as part of a palette.  Coastal Scents has a great 12 color palette and there’s a 5 color wheel from Sonya but that one’s a bit more expensive.

I know CoverGirl also makes a corrective concealer in a wheel of colors but I’ve never had any luck with CG products so you’ll have to try it out and report back to the rest of us.

Other Uses For Color Correcting Concealers

In case you’re worried about all those weird concealer colors and how you’ll possibly use them all up, rest assured that these color correctors are also multipurpose.  Blue is also good for covering up blemishes and red spots while purple can be good for brightening up dull yellow looking skin.  Which you might know is the color your skin takes on after a long winter or a late night out…  Plus you’ll never know when you’ll need to pull out the blue and purple again after a spray tan or tanning accident. 😉
